Ug! Ew! Arg! Gross!

I certainly do love spring, but with spring comes unruly bugs.  I spent a fair bit of time during my ride home's uphill climb trying to fish a blasted gnat out of my eye.  Unpleasant on so many levels.

  1. I cross two rivers on my commute. In early June I'm guaranteed to ingest a little extra protein on my way to work.

  2. I carry a bandanna with me, particularly if I'm riding around water at night. There are some places that you can't take a breath without sucking in bugs.

You just have to remember to take it off before you walk into a convenience store.

  3. Ick, that's never fun. I need to buy sunglasses now that you mention this.

  4. Oh geez, I can't decide which is worse! Bug in the eye or bug in your teeth??

  5. I ride at dusk, sometimes, on the Mississippi River levee bike path in New Orleans. That's when the bugs come out. By the time I make it home, I'm brushing their remains out of my decolletage!

  6. I was on a fast descent one night when I saw the mother of all bugs heading right toward me. It's funny how your eye can focus on something like that with everything whizzing by so fast.

It wasn't a moth or something with big wingspread. It was some kind of hard-shelled beetle.

He must have seen me about the same time I saw him, because he did a last-second deployment of whatever bugs use as air brakes, but it was no good.

I felt him bounce off the back of my throat.

I have no idea where he went after that. I don't think he bounced out; I didn't spit him out; I didn't chew him up.

When I got home, I checked my shorts. That sucker was moving so hard and so fast, I thought he might have made it all the way through.

  8. I wear sunglasses or clear shades in bug season. I'm allergic to bees, and the other summer, when I WASN'T wearing my shades, a bee hit me right on my eyelid and stung me! OUCH!! Had to go to the hospital for treatment. :/ So any kind of eyewear really is important, for ANY kind of flying object! :)
