Spring Fever

The weather has been so nice here! High 60's and sunny. wonderful weather to ride.

Yet, I have only ridden once this week!! arg. Here are my stupid excuses:

Monday: was housesitting at a house that is actually closer to work, but farther from my safe route. So I drove to work instead of driving twice the distance to get somewhere safe enough to ride.
(I learned of a new route to work directly from my house that I plan to test run this weekend to make srue I know how to get there and the time it takes, etc)

Tuesday: RODE!!

Wednesday: Rain and storms predicted. Which did happen, but only in the middle of the day. So frustrating.

Thursday (today): woke up 10 minutes before i had to leave for work. Oops. So I had to drive like a bat out of hell only to get to work 10 minutes late. I also have to go somewhere immediately after work, which is when I really feel the pain of living in a cycling un-friendly city. There is no way to get to where I need to go on my bike. At all. All day today I have been sad that I didn't ride.

Friday: I.AM.RIDING. no matter what.

The guilt and remorse has been too much! Do you feel this way, or have weeks like this? In the back of my mind I know that there is only a small window of time between freezing cold and stupidly hot and humid, so every day that I drive feels like a waste and a shame.

To sunny days and Spring Fever and getting back on the saddle!

(oh, are you coming to the Bici Prom??...I hope to see you there)

  1. I don't think you should be too hard on yourself. You are new to this and are looking for new ways to get around town. Remember that all these people who seem to be doing so much more biking than you, started where you are. For me, what has worked best is having the goal of riding more and using the car less. It's been a gradual thing, but it does involve stepping out of my comfort zone. Doing things I haven't done before, like riding 13 miles to work, 4 days in a week.

I aim to be the person who doesn't let weather effect my riding. When I do drive, I try to make it because I have to, not because I don't feel like riding. Also, when I'm on my bike I reflect on how good it makes me feel, even on those days when the weather isn't cooperating.

One thing I've noticed is that on every ride there is some moment when I'm hating it, like when I'm at the bottom of a hill or when a cold breeze cuts through me. But those moments pass as I keep peddling they are followed by moments of complete joy.

Then, I start finding ways to bike more... more often.

  2. That's so crappy that sometimes you simply don't have a safe route from point A to point B. Reading that makes me appreciate my city more. No need to feel bad! Gotta stay safe.

  3. After cranking out 1200miles between June and November, I haven't been on a bike since Nov18th. That hurts!
You'll find a groove and stick with it when the time comes.

  4. I've been working insane hours this week, eliminating all fun - except for the ride to and from. Even in pouring rain (hmm, need fenders and rain gear...) carrying a change of clothes. But leaving each night, the streets wide open, I would get a short blast of freedom. So great.

So I know the feeling when that gets taken away (or botched due to pathetic personal weakness and sloth! BAD Bike commuter!).
