Ew

Does anyone out there have tips for combating dry skin?

I've been feeling particularly disgusting these last few days and my hands have started bleeding. I used some Aquaphor stuff but it makes me feel like a grease ball and I can't touch anything without leaving a slimy layer.

What to do?!?

  1. is this bicycle related dryness? if so, the only thing i can think of is using riding gloves to protect your hands from the wind. i use fingerless gloves even when it is nice out.

    aloe vera?

  2. Using some light oil like apricot or grapeseed at night. It's good for you and at least once your skin recovers you can use less. I suspect it's dry cold air that's causing the problem. I've used the apricot before and it's not greasy. An idea at least.

  4. Apply lotion often.
A good lotion is nice, but it's the consistency that works.
I also found using most bar soap tended to hurt me also because they stripped away so much of the good body oils.

  5. I hate that greasy hand feeling myself, & the best hand lotion I've found that does not leave you with that icky feeling is Aveeno Intense Relief hand cream. It also "lasts through hand washings."

  6. I haven't found anything great, so I'm making note of others' suggestions, too. My hands are super dry, too. I use Burt's Bees hand lotion, which is definitely not greasy and smells almondy, but it's not heavy duty.

  7. My mom used to do this with her hands and feet cause they would both get really really chapped. They make special cotton gloves/socks to wear at night. You lotion your hands/feet well, perferably a cream over a lotion, then slip the gloves/socks on as you sleep. It helps your skin retain the mosture. Leaves your skin soft.

  8. Aveeno Intense Relief Hand Therapy. In addition to the many wonderful suggestions above, apply immediately after bathing.

  9. I'm with Krista...light cotton gloves when you sleep -- just like old ladies do!

I really like Weleda's "Skin Food" -- leaves a pretty greasy feeling so it's better to let it "steep" overnight on your hands.

The Mission Skincare Revive Gel that I reviewed on Bikecommuters.com is aloe-based. It's good for soothing chapped or sunburned skin but doesn't really moisturize. Better to use after shaving or something than to replenish your dry skin...

  10. Udderly Smooth. You can find it at hardware stores or tack shops. It's the lanolin.

  11. My hands get torn up even with gloves, and I've had nothing but good luck with Dr. Bronner's balms:

They smell super good and if you rub them in, they're not greasy at all.
    Plus, the tins are cute:)

  13. I use Neutrogena Norwegian Formula body lotion. The hand lotion is also fabulous. I get really dry skin in the winter...to the point of cracking and bleeding like you. But this is the best product I've ever found, and I have been chap free all winter. It even keeps a couple spots of excema under control. Good stuff.
