Dreaming

I know that this will probably never happen in Birmingham, but a girl can wish, can't she?

Seeing this literally made me ache with longing and angst.

I am hopeful to see cities that care about pedestrians and are NOT just interested in the quickest way to get cars from point A to point B.

I AM encouraged for Birmingham's future, with the baby steps being taken. One example of such initiatives is Red Mountain Park, a recreational, public park space in excess of 1,100 acres. The park will include 18 miles of biking and hiking trails, fields and picnic areas. Still no timeline (that I know of) for when the park will be complete, but we will keep you up to date on the progress.

  1. The US and the southeast in particular have a long way to go with this. Some days I just want to give up and move to Europe...

  2. New York's a dirty, crowded, noisy city, and there's no smell quite like Chinatown in July, but it's far and away the best and most wonderful place I've ever lived.

Wife, kids, and I went up last year to visit (with bikes), and the apartment we were borrowing was on 9th Ave in Chelsea, looked right out over the (at the time) brand new Dutch-style separated bike lane. I've never had such a good time and felt so safe in a bike lane as we did that weekend, the infrastructure stuff they're getting into is pretty exciting for fans of human scaled cityscapes.

It always makes me chuckle a little when, in the course of any thread on transit infrastructure, someone from an exurb complains that it's okay for other people, but they couldn't ever live in such a "hellhole" as New York (or DC, or as Atrios frequently notes, Philly).

  3. I know what you mean. The longing. The longing!

I saw a vid on another site (i think view from the bike lane) of some glorious Norwegian bike lane, separated from traffic by several feet, and with sensors to CHANGE THE LIGHTS TO GREEN WHEN BIKES APPROACH!!!

Hearing about that level of support for bikers just seems like a cruel joke...
