Hello

Hi internets. This blog is going to be a spin off (of sorts) of Triathablog, a fitness project that ends today.

I hope to write about bike commuting, riding events in town and a bit of bike fashion. This blog is open to all urban riders, especially those female riders in Birmingham, AL. I hope to get a strong female riding community started here, as it seems to be a boys club (which I love!!). The boys have their site Brocycle, and this is ours. I was going to go with Hocycle to match their Brocycle, but thought Bike Skirt was better.

Why skirt?

From Websters Online:
skirt
Pronunciation: \ˈskərt\
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, from Old Norse skyrta shirt, kirtle — more at shirt
Date: 14th century

1 a (1): a free-hanging part of an outer garment or undergarment extending from the waist down (2): a separate free-hanging outer garment or undergarment usually worn by women and girls covering some or all of the body from the waist down b: either of two usually leather flaps on a saddle covering the bars on which the stirrups are hung c: a cloth facing that hangs from the bottom edge or across the front of a piece of furniture d: the lower branches of a tree when near the ground
2 a: the rim, periphery, or environs of an area bplural : outlying parts (as of a town or city)
3: a part or attachment serving as a rim, border, or edging
4slang : a girl or woman
— skirt·ed adjective

I thought this pretty well covers everything this site is about. Girls, on the periphery...wearing skirts!

welcome. Anyone want to go for a ride?

  1. Sounds like fun. If only I wasn't a suburban girl sans bike....

  3. I'm from around BHM... HYT to be exact, but never bike commuted there. Now doing it in Omaha, Nebraska, longing for those mild Alabama winters.

I don't cycle in a skirt, but I would if I were a lady, or a little more Scottish.

Keep biking the good ride in 2009.

  4. Natalie-you can come over and borrow my bike anytime!
Jen-let's ride together for sure. I hope you feel better. Not riding is the worst part of being sick.
Scott-the winters are good, although getting to work sweaty in January is strange. Riding in a kilt is an interesting idea.
